Tohoku University runs a genuinely substantial startup ecosystem for a non-elite-ranked school, anchored by Tohoku University Venture Partners (THVP), a VC 100% funded by the university via MEXT with about $122M under management, 37 portfolio companies and 6 IPOs. Its flagship spinout is ispace, the publicly listed lunar-exploration company whose rover technology originates from Prof. Kazuya Yoshida's Space Robotics Lab in the School of Engineering.
