USTC is China's premier deep-tech founder pipeline, dubbed the 'Caltech of China,' spinning research out of its School of the Gifted Young into national-champion companies rather than running a broad consumer-startup/accelerator culture. Its standout is Cambricon ('China's Nvidia'), founded in 2016 by USTC prodigy brothers Chen Tianshi and Chen Yunji and listed on Shanghai's STAR Market in July 2021, now valued around RMB 238 billion. Earlier, PhD student Liu Qingfeng founded speech-AI giant iFlytek (1999, ~RMB 116bn), and USTC alumni also seeded SenseTime and Unisound. USTC is a world-elite research institution and the global leader in quantum information science. In the Nature Index 2025 Research Leaders it ranked 3rd in the world (Share 850.60 in 2024, behind only the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Harvard) and 2nd globally for physical-sciences output. Owned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is the home base of Pan Jianwei ('Father of Quantum'), whose teams built the Jiuzhang photonic quantum computer (first photonic quantum supremacy, Dec 2020), the Zuchongzhi superconducting processors, and the Micius quantum-communications satellite.
